Installation

Footnotes Made Easy can be found and installed via the Plugin menu within WordPress administration (Plugins -> Add New). Alternatively, it can be downloaded from WordPress.org and installed manually…

• Upload the entire footnotes-made-easy folder to your wp-content/plugins/ directory.
• Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress administration.

Voila! It’s ready to go.

Getting Started

Creating footnotes in your content is straightforward:

• Insert your footnote by wrapping the desired text in double parentheses.

Example:

This is a sentence ((and this is your footnote)).

The footnote text will automatically appear at the bottom of the post/page.

• Important Note: Ensure you leave a space before the opening double parentheses to activate the footnote properly.

Options

Footnotes Made Easy offers extensive customization options to control the appearance and functionality of footnotes. These can be accessed in the WordPress admin area under Settings -> Footnotes. Here you can configure:

• Footnote Identifier: Customize the symbol or number used to mark footnotes in the text.
• Backlinks: Enable or disable backlinks to each footnote for easier navigation.
• Display Style: Choose whether to show footnotes as a list or using tooltips (requires jQuery).

Working with Paginated Posts

For posts with multiple pages, the plugin allows you to display footnotes on each page independently. By default, each page in a paginated post will have its own footnote list starting from 1.

To customize the starting number of footnotes on a particular page:

• Insert a tag between each <!–nextpage–> marker in your post.
• Use the tag format <!–startnum=5–>, where “5” is the desired starting number for that page’s footnotes.

This approach allows you to maintain consistent numbering across paginated posts.

Referencing Existing Footnotes

If you need to reference an existing footnote multiple times, you have two options:

• Exact Text Method: Re-enter the exact text of the original footnote. The plugin will automatically link to the previous instance.
• Number Reference Method: Alternatively, use ((ref:1)) to reference a specific footnote by its number.

Note: The number referencing method does not work across multiple pages in a paginated post. Additionally, inserting a new footnote without updating the referenced numbers may lead to mismatches.
